One Worker Killed, Two Others Injured In Alabama Construction Zone Crash
February 28, 2012
The Alabama Department of Public Safety (ADPS) is investigating a single-vehicle accident that left one man dead and two others injured. According to reports from Opelika Auburn News, the crash happened at 10:04 a.m. Monday on Interstate-85, near mile marker 48.
A spokesman for the ADPS, Sgt. Steven Jarrett, said a 52-year-old man from Oakbrook, Illinois, was driving a 2010 Ford Focus through a construction zone when he veered into the median and struck two construction workers, one of whom was killed instantly.
The other worker who was struck, a 44-year-old man from Spanish Fort, was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Focus was also taken to the hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Jarrett says that the agency will continue to evaluate what factors may have led to the crash.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that motor vehicle accidents accounted for 72% of work zone fatal injuries in 2010. This means that from 2003 to 2007, 639 highway workers lost their lives in accidents involving cars and trucks passing through their work zones.
The Alabama Wrongful Death Attorneys with Norris Injury Lawyers would like to send their condolences to the family of the highway construction worker who was killed. They would also like to wish a speedy recovery to the driver and the other worker who was injured in the crash.
