One Worker Killed, Two Others Injured In Alabama Construction Zone Crash

February 28, 2012

The Alabama Department of Public Safety (ADPS) is investigating a single-vehicle accident that left one man dead and two others injured. According to reports from Opelika Auburn News, the crash happened at 10:04 a.m. Monday on Interstate-85, near mile marker 48.

A spokesman for the ADPS, Sgt. Steven Jarrett, said a 52-year-old man from Oakbrook, Illinois, was driving a 2010 Ford Focus through a construction zone when he veered into the median and struck two construction workers, one of whom was killed instantly.

The other worker who was struck, a 44-year-old man from Spanish Fort, was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Focus was also taken to the hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Jarrett says that the agency will continue to evaluate what factors may have led to the crash.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that motor vehicle accidents accounted for 72% of work zone fatal injuries in 2010. This means that from 2003 to 2007, 639 highway workers lost their lives in accidents involving cars and trucks passing through their work zones.

Three Injured In Eight-Vehicle Hoover, Alabama, Car Crash

February 21, 2012

A bizarre string of events resulted in an eight-car accident that left three people injured in Hoover, Alabama. According to reports from ABC 33/40 News, the incident happened yesterday afternoon along Highway 150.

A spokesman for the Hoover Police Department, Capt. Coker, stated that an officer began to follow a Dodge pickup truck down the highway after observing the driver weaving in and out of traffic. When he tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver sped away and a short, high-speed pursuit ensued.

Before crashing into two cars at the intersection of Highway 31 and Highway 150, the driver of the pickup struck and damaged six other vehicles. When police pulled him from his truck, they found him to be completely nude.

The suspect and the driver of a Honda Accord that was struck during the chase were both taken to a local hospital by ambulance to be treated for injuries. Two other people were also taken to the hospital by a vehicle that picked them up at the scene.

The naked driver was placed under arrest and is currently being held pending an investigation into the incident.

Two Killed in Separate North Alabama Single-Vehicle Crashes

February 14, 2012

Two single-vehicle crashes just days apart have claimed the lives of two north Alabama men. According to a Times-Daily article, the most recent accident occurred around 8:00 AM Sunday along Alabama 64.

Reports by Alabama state troopers say that the 48-year-old man was heading west in his 1996 Saturn sedan, when he veered off the right side of the road and struck a power pole about five miles east of Lexington in Lauderdale County. The man was declared dead at the scene from blunt force trauma by the county’s assistant coroner.

This was not the first fatal accident in the area this week though.

On Thursday, another male driver was killed in Lauderdale County, just north of St. Florian, after being involved in a single-vehicle crash. The driver was on Butler Creek Road when officials say he lost control of his Toyota 4Runner, crossed the roadway, ran over a mailbox and through a ditch before going airborne and slamming into a tree on the east side of the road.

The number of fatal crashes in the state has been on a sharp incline compared to numbers from this time last year. Troopers say that 51 fatalities have been reported across the state this year, compared to the 42 reported this time last year.

Combination Of Plavix And Aspirin Ineffective As Stroke Treatment

February 7, 2012

New research indicates that combining clopidogrel (Plavix) with an Aspirin regimen may not help prevent recurrent stroke. According to an article on the topic released by MedPage Today, the combination of medications actually increases the chances of hemorrhages and death.

The trial was the first large-scale examination on the effects the combination could have and recruited more than 3,000 participants from 81 testing locations spanning over eight countries.

Researchers conducting the study found that patients receiving the combination of drugs had double the risk of major bleeding than those that were taking Placebo and Aspirin. Very comparable conclusions were drawn in reference to the risk of death patients taking the combination of drugs faced versus those just taking Aspirin. Patients on the combination had a rate of death at 2.1 percent versus a 1.4 percent risk for those taking just one drug or the other.

Despite the conclusions, researchers plan to conduct a second part of the study that will examine the effects of the combination treatment on high blood pressure.

The Alabama drug injury attorneys with Norris Injury Lawyers say it’s important to discuss all aspects of your medications–including dosage, side effects, and interaction–with your pharmacist or doctor before taking any kind of medication.
